Colonel John S. Slocum (1836-1861)
Veteran of the Civil War, Killed in the Battle Of Bull Run (1861)
I chose this photo not only because of its history (an honest-to-goodness
veteran of a battle only history buffs follow) but also for something that
happened as I had approached the grave:
The gloved hand (visible in photo) holds a cigar (Cuban, but I couldn't
be sure).
Above the glove it has a photo of a Saint (a Mass Card, such as you would
give a grieving relative expressly for that occasion) with the words, written
in a blocky, yet masculine hand: "Sleep Well Noble Warrior." I wonder who
left it...a relative?
Whomever it was it was very thoughtful...as all veterans, no matter the
Battle or War, should be remembered.
Sleep well, indeed.
