The Gibson sisters
This quartet of stones is in a plot near a copse of trees. Made of white
sandstone, the large cracks were made from vandals that tried to topple them.
The largest, in the second row, is the oldest daughter, Sarah Gibson (died
April 5, 1880, aged 10; inscription: "She goeth well."); next to her is Lavinia
Gibson (died April 7, 1880, aged 8; inscription: "You knowest best"). The
front row (large stone) is her sister Alice Gibson (died March 21, 1879,
aged 2; inscription: "She is sleeping.") and the last is Mary Gibson (died
March 24, 1879, aged 12 days; inscription: "Our baby".) To lose one child
is horrible; the grief of losing four over the space of a year must have
been beyond reason.
